Prof. Dr. Dogan Keles

Making energy markets work for a renewable future.

Energy economist at the Technical University of Denmark. I analyse how electricity, hydrogen and green-fuel markets must be designed, priced and modelled so that a power system built on wind and solar stays reliable and affordable.

Research in focus

Findings that matter in practice

Green fuels need a price premium to scale

A Danish case study of energy hubs found that sufficient amounts of renewable ammonia and methanol are only produced with a price premium of about 50% (around €0.16 per kg) over conventional fuels. Policy design therefore matters as much as technology.

Kountouris, Langer, Bramstoft, Münster & Keles, Energy Policy (2023)

Hydrogen infrastructure should be planned at European scale

Planning hydrogen infrastructure for Europe as a whole, rather than country by country, supports the rapid scale-up of hydrogen production that climate targets require.

Kountouris et al., Nature Communications (2024)

Dunkelflaute is the real test for a renewable power system

Periods with little wind and sun show whether supply and demand across the European market can still be balanced. Analysing them is essential for judging generation adequacy in a system dominated by renewables.
